Jen Atkin on the Biggest 2020 Hair Trends

Jen Atkin on the Biggest 2020 Hair Trends

On a stroll down memory mane lane, you might remember 2019 for being the year of the French girl bob, glass hair and waist-grazing locks. But there's some new hair energy we're channeling in 2020 and here to help us navigate those vibes is our founder Jen Atkin. Hairstylist to Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber and Bella Hadid, Jen can spot a hair trend from a mile away. Keep reading for the haircuts, styles, and emerging hair trends she says will dominate 2020.

The Modern Shag

I think we will start seeing a lot of the modern shag this season.  It started with Jane Fonda, but models like Freja Beha, Daria Warbary, and Mica Arganaraz brought it back. What makes it modern is the texture. We’ve been seeing a lot of women with different hair textures rocking this modern twist to a 70’s haircut. One of the reasons I started OUAI is because I was inspired by real women and the girl on the go that only has five minutes to do her hair and this modern shag plays into that inspiration.

Pulling It Off

To keep your shag modern and fresh, ask your stylist for face framing angles and layers throughout to give the shag effect. If you’re open to bangs, go for it but be sure it keep them wispy. And if you’re not ready, then ask for a long fringe that complements your face shape.

Styling The Shag

For wavy hair, one of my favorite tricks for styling hair is ‘the clip trick.’ This is an easy no-fuss way to get incredible natural looking waves. Spray damp hair generously with OUAI Wave Spray, then use duckbill clips to create a dent in the hair, pushing the hair up at the root, then clipping into place, pushing the hair up underneath it, and clipping into place until the entire head has been clipped and the hair is in an S-pattern. Let the hair air dry or blow-dry over then remove the clips, scrunch and you’ve got beach waves.

If you have curly hair, prep damp hair with OUAI Curl Crème and diffuse with the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer with the diffuser attachment (on low heat and low speed). Diffuse until dry and finish with the OUAI Finishing Crème for a defined and moisturized finish. *Pro tip: one of the biggest secrets to defined curls is not touching it too much and using a micro fiber towel or cotton T-shirt to squeeze any moisture out. Terry cloth towels strip curly hair of moisture and cause frizz.

Thick Headbands and Subtle Pearls

Thicker headbands will be having a moment this year. You can dress up any look with one; you can either wear your hair down or pulled back in a bun. Hair accessories are always a nice accent to a hairstyle. Pearls really had a moment this past year in many forms: headbands, Barrettes, and pins. I think we will still see pearls, but in less forms.

Natural Texture

Embrace your natural texture! The OUAI Wave Spray and OUAI Air Dry Foam are both great for a quick and effortless look. Both are products that help enhance Natural texture and The Dyson Supersonic with the Diffuser attachment and Supersonic Gentle Air Attachment can help give a natural air dry look (medium heat and medium speed).

The It Fringe

Wispy bangs will be the fringe of the season. They’re so versatile and is perfect for girls that don’t want to fully commit to blunt bangs, since they are a full time job sometimes. Ask your stylist for longer fringe and face framing to compliment your face shape and to keep it wispy. These bangs will easily transform into blended layers come next season.Bangs should be styled when the hair is wet. If the hair is dry, spray the bang area with a spray bottle, prep the hair with OUAI Volume Spray, and dry using the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer with the Styling Concentrator (low heat and low speed).

Emerging Hair Trend of 2020

Using less thermal heat will be a major trend this year. The Dyson Airwrap Styler is a great way to stay away from thermal heat and achieve a complete blowout look because it has intelligent heat control which measures and regulates the heat. By keeping the temperature below 302°F, it helps protect your hair from extreme heat damage and maintain shine.

For best results, prep damp hair with OUAI Heat Protection Spray, section hair into quadrants, starting in the front use the Dyson Airwrap Styler and 1.6 inch Airwrap barrel (high heat and high speed) to start smoothing out subsections angling away from the face. Finish this look off with OUAI Finishing Crème for a defined and moisturized finish.
