Does the Dyson Airwrap Styler Actually Work? We Put it to the Test

For $550, one would assume that the Dyson Airwrap Styler comes with a personal hairstylist. But if you're like us and need sound proof before dropping your entire paycheck on the seemingly magical wand, you'll do some extensive research. In our case, we took the Dyson Airwrap Styler straight to the OUAI studio to test it on four different hair types—extra curly, wavy/frizzy, flat/full, and medium/frizzy texture. The heatless styler is hard to come by these days, but luckily our founder Jen Atkin lent us one for the experiment.

First a little about the Dyson Airwrap Styler. According to Dyson, it uses a phenomenon called the Coanda effect to attract the hair and wrap it around the barrel for you, creating a style without extreme heat. Its heat control measures and regulates the heat, keeping the temperature below 302°F, which helps protect hair from extreme heat damage and maintain shine. By combining the moisture in your hair with airflow and controlled heat, it can style and dry at the same time (a major game-changer for girls on the go). The complete Airwrap set comes with barrel attachments to curl or wave the hair, and brush attachments to smooth or volumize (as you can see in the picture above).

Now back to our research. We won't give anything away but instead, let you make up your own mind about the Dyson Airwrap Styler. Keep in mind that the girls on the squad styled one side of their hair only to create a revealing before and after picture. Warning: what you see may shock you.

Dyson Airwrap Styler Review OUAI Curly Hair Beachy Waves

Goal: Beach Waves

Hair Type: Very Curly

Style Time: 14 minutes

Irinel used the 1.6 inch Airwrap Barrel attachment. She wrapped her damp hair manually around the barrel instead of letting it suction. She wrapped the hair around the barrel before turning the Airwrap on, leaving the ends out, and then styled the hair going away from the face. To set the wave, she used to cool button feature to hit it with a cool shot of air for 5-7 seconds then released it. Then she polished the beach waves with OUAI Finishing Crème.

Dyson Airwrap Styler Review OUAI Hollywood Waves

Goal: Old Hollywood Waves

Hair Type: Naturally Wavy, Dry, Frizzy

Style Time: 15 minutes

On damp hair, Nina used the 1.2 inch Airwrap Barrel attachment, styling the hair going all the same direction, away from the face. Each section took about a total of 20 seconds then she brushed the waves out with a boar bristle brush. For a lived-in finish, she sprayed OUAI Texturizing Hair Spray all over, then applied OUAI Hair Oil to her dry ends for healthy shine.

Dyson Airwrap Styler Review OUAI Bouncy Blowout Flat Hair

Goal: Bouncy Blowout

Hair Type: Flat, Full

Style Time: 10 minutes

Sara used the Round Volumizing Brush attachment. Starting at the roots, she worked her way down to ends, then twisted up to the root and held for a few seconds. She used a shot of cool air to set then blasted her roots with OUAI Volumizing Hair Spray for extra body.

Dyson Airwrap Styler Review OUAI Straight Hair Thick Hair

Goal: Straight

Hair Type: Medium Texture, Frizzy, Natural Volume

Style Time: 12 minutes

Amanda used the Firm Smoothing Brush to straighten her medium-textured frizzy hair. She used the brush on top of the hair to smooth it out. The way the air came out of the brush made it so that it didn't blow her hair off of the tool. It attached the hair to the tool without sucking it in, a feature that prevented a tangled mess.

The verdict: The Dyson Airwrap Styler takes a few tries to get comfortable handling but once you get the hang of it, we can tell it'll save so much time styling your hair. Not to mention the amount of heat damage you can dodge by using this thing. Sure, it has an exorbitant price tag, but we all know that heat styling causes breakage and dry ends, and damaged hair requires treatments that cost money. Instead of trying to remedy the damage, why not avoid it altogether? Less styling time and healthy hair are two promises the Airwrap will keep.
