In case you missed it, we recently launched our new Detox Shampoo, a concentrated shampoo that uses apple cider vinegar to deeply cleanse away dirt, oil, impurities, and buildup from styling products. Think of Detox Shampoo like makeup remover for your hair and scalp—it’s the cleanser you reach for when you want to remove the tough stuff and start fresh. Now think of our Fine, Medium and Thick Shampoos like your everyday cleanser. They still clean, but also hydrate and tackle all your individual concerns.

Washing your hair may feel like second nature to you—cleansing your scalp, not so much. Did you know your scalp has lipid and sweat glands, just like your face? This means it’s important to cleanse your scalp the same OUAI you cleanse your face. In honor of Detox Shampoo's launch, here are three reasons to incorporate a scalp detox into your weekly routine.

1. Restore Volume and Shine

You might think a shower and some shampoo are enough to keep your scalp happy but the truth is, most shower water contains harsh minerals that strip your hair color and over time build up on the scalp.

Detox Shampoo contains chelating agents that help to remove heavy metals, minerals and chlorine in hard water that are known to cause hair color fading and damage. Removing chlorine and hard water buildup are essential to a healthy scalp and vibrant hair color.  After rinsing away all the chlorine and hard water buildup, say goodbye to dull hair.

An added bonus: Detox Shampoo reduces frizz. Key ingredient hydrolyzed keratin helps fill in the missing keratin naturally found in the hair follicle, helping to reduce frizz and flyaways.

2. Ward Off Bacteria and Dandruff

Detox Shampoo is like your favorite juice cleanse—simple, but gets the job done. It’s formulated with apple cider vinegar which means it has all the benefits you love, minus the scent—like our Rose Hair & Body Oil, Detox Shampoo smells like Melrose Place. So what does this mean for itchy, flaky scalps and frizz? Apple cider vinegar not only helps remove flakes, reside, and buildup but it also helps balance the scalp and aids it in the natural detoxification process. After you cleanse with Detox Shampoo, your scalp is ready to ward off bacteria and scalp imbalances. A healthy scalp = a dandruff-free scalp.

For an extra-deep scalp detox, reach for Scalp & Body Scrub and Detox Shampoo. Scalp & Body Scrub’s sugar crystals will gently exfoliate and help calm dryness and itchiness while Detox Shampoo will lift away impurities, oil, and dirt. If you want to exfoliate AND cleanse, use both! Use them together, or use the Scalp & Body Scrub first and follow with Detox Shampoo.

3. Unclog Hair Follices

Haven’t washed your hair since, what day is it? Been on a Super Dry Shampoo binge? Just took a virtual workout class that was way harder than expected? If you answered yes to any of these, your scalp could be covered in a combination of sebum, dirt, dandruff and/or product build-up. And don’t forget—your scalp has lipid and sweat glands (just like your face, so it needs to be treated the same way). If left untreated, scalp buildup can cause hair follicles to clog, leading to scalp inflammation and hair loss/thinning.

Enter: Detox Shampoo. Rotate Detox Shampoo into your routine once a week to deeply cleanse away dirt, oil, and impurities. To get the most out of Detox Shampoo, brush and detangle your hair first then follow these steps:

  1. Thoroughly wet your hair from roots to ends with lukewarm water then squeeze out the excess moisture
  2. Lather a quarter-size amount of Detox Shampoo in between your hands (add in a dime-size amount of Scalp & Body Scrub if you want to exfoliate)
  3. Part hair using your fingers and apply it as close to the scalp as possible,
  4. Leave it on for one to three minutes
  5. Finish by rinsing with cold water to close the hair cuticle and create added shine
  6. For extra TLC, apply our restorative healing mask, Treatment Masque, chill for 10 minutes, then rinse
