Face serums, under eye masks, brow gels—there was a lil something for every inch of our marvelous mugs except for our lips. That’s until KNC Beauty CEO Kristen Noel Crawley changed the game and presented our precious pouts with the gift that keeps on giving—all natural lip masks. A little over a year old, KNC Beauty isn’t Kristen’s only baby. When the mother of two, who’s also a jewelry designer and gallery owner, isn’t on a digital detox, she’s building up her brand in the digital age like a boss or, as of recently, filming mini beauty reviews for Instagram. We caught up with the lip mask maven to talk beauty and business—keep scrolling for three things Kristen’s obsessed with now, her favorite hair and makeup products, and what inspired her to create KNC.
Top products you can’t live without:
My Clarisonic toothbrush, La Prairie Eye Cream, and KNC beauty all natural lip masks.
3 things you’re obsessed with right now:
Chai-liscous smoothies from Kreation Juicery, Manolo Blahnik Hangisi Mules, and digital detoxing.
You invented a new product category, a lip mask—what inspired the idea?
A trip to Tokyo with Dior. I found a lip mask there and I loved it, but was disappointed with all the chemical ingredients so I decided to make my own.
You’ve pivoted a few times in your career, first you were a beauty writer, then a jewelry designer and now a beauty boss. What advice would you give to someone looking to make a change in their career?
I actually still do all of these things and I'm a mom too lol! I think people should do whatever they want. We live in a time where we have so many resources and I just think that we should all just do what makes us happy. I love to write about beauty because it gives me the opportunity to try new things. My jewelry line is how I get my creative ideas out. My beauty company is how I've gained experience in running a real business. The list goes on and I'm sure I'll do even more things in the years to come.
What did you want to be when you were a kid?
What’s the biggest surprise you’ve had since launching KNC?
I've been really blessed to have support from all of my friends with KNC beauty. I would say the biggest surprise was Kim and Kanye casually strolling into my launch brunch.
Tell us a little about your daily hair routine.
I always wore my hair straight, but now I'm embracing my curls. I love the new OUAI Curl Jelly - it really works! I also use Leonor Greyl Hair Oil and OUAI Wave Spray. I don't use too many products, because my hair is thin and gets oily easily. I had dandruff before I started using the Philip Kingsley Dry Scalp Shampoo, it helped a lot. Instead of conditioner, I use the OUAI Treatment Masque about 3x a week.
Who does your cut and color?
Cherin Choi at Salon Benjamin in Downtown LA.
You have a friend in town for 48 hours, where do you tell them to eat, drink and shop?
Eat at Sugarfish, drinks at my place, and shop at shop super street on La Brea.
You have multiple businesses, you have two kids, you’re busy AF: What’s a beauty shortcut you can share with the OUAI readers?
I know, right? I really don't have time for anything. I have a five minute morning routine for makeup:
- Splash face with cold water
- La Mer Tonic all over my face
- A few drops of Dr. Barbara Sturm Hyaluronic Serum
- Moisturize with La Mer Gel Cream mixed with Dr. Barbara Sturm Sun Drops (SPF 50)
- Glossier Cloud Paint on my cheeks in Haze
- Coat my lashes in Milk Makeup Ubame Mascara
- Add a quick coat of Dior Addict Lip Gloss in Confident
