OUAI Crush: Julie Schott
Welcome to the second edition of OUAI Crush with Beauty and Fitness Director of Elle.com Julie Schott. Learn about what three products she can’t live without, her journey into the beauty industry and current workout routine.
Can you tell us a little bit about your morning routine?
Ideally I would do no makeup, but until I look like Alicia Keys with no makeup, that’s not happening. In the morning I layer Dr. Gross Vitamin C serum (makes your skin shiny like plastic in a good way), Bioderma Light Cream (won’t make you breakout), and Armani foundation, Dr Jart BB cream, or if I’m feeling myself, just concealer. My hair looks like the girl from The Ring right now so I put serum on the ends or add Wave Spray to make it more approachable.
What are three products you can't live without right now?
How did you get your start as a beauty editor ?
I studied creative writing at Pratt, but when I wasn’t in class (and also sometimes when I should’ve been in class), I would intern at different magazines. My first-first was at this magazine in Greenpoint called CHIEF that looked a lot like VICE. I mostly wrote fake ads on Craiglist and made fruit salad. Not long after, ed2010 posted an ELLE Accessories internship and I don’t think the interview process was very rigorous back then because I got the job. Once ELLE agreed to have me I refused to leave and stayed for a year before going to Teen Vogue, Lucky, Self.
Any advice you have to young girls who want a career in the beauty industry?
Make your work visible, whether it’s YouTube tutorials, writing clips, or your social media accounts, traditional resumes are a little redundant in beauty.
Favorite OUAI Product?
What's your dream vacation destination and what do you pack?
Somewhere with good light, fast wifi, cute animals, monogrammed bathrobes, a private beach, and no zika. I’m easy.
Current favorite artist to workout to?
Meek Mill, Migos, O.T. Genesis, and Spotify’s Rap Caviar list.
You also cover fitness for Elle, can you share a bit about your workout routine?
A friend introduced me to the 7-Minute Workout app on winter vacation. It’s like a fitness starter pack—just 12 uncomplicated exercises using your own body weight.
Post-gym, to wash hair or not to wash?
No wash! Unless it’s warm outside and I can air dry.
