Hi, I’m Hatty Garcia, the fashion, beauty, and lifestyle content creator behind @hattycakes, and today I’m going to show you how to get voluminous curls with all-day staying power.
Having long, waist-length, stick-straight hair, it’s a struggle to achieve flowing waves that are intact all day long. I've learned that getting long-lasting, bouncy curls requires a combination of hair care prep and using the right curling iron size and right volumizing hair spray.
My inspiration for this look is a slightly more elevated, everyday curl. I wanted a wavy hairstyle with big volume that could dress up a casual daytime look, but also just as easily be worn to an evening date night out.
Depending on the length and thickness of your hair, this look can take anywhere between 15 to 30 minutes to create this look. This style works best on one or two day-old hair - not too squeaky clean, but not too dirty.
Step 1: Hair Prep
I start by only washing my hair every two to three days to keep it from drying out too much. I use the OUAI Medium Shampoo, which is perfect for my combination hair.
Then I follow-up with the OUAI Thick Conditioner - skipping the roots - and mostly focusing the product on the ends of my hair. The conditioner is super moisturizing, but doesn’t leave my hair feeling greasy or weighed down.
I’ll end each week with The OUAI Scalp & Body Scrub, which removes the hair spray, dry shampoo, and any other build up. It also smells heavenly and I feel so pampered after using it!
I always let my hair air dry as it ends up having more volume and holds onto the slightest bit of texture (which is a great base for curling).
Step 2: Protect the Tresses
I start off by sectioning my hair - tying half of it up - so I can get even curls throughout. Then, I use the OUAI Heat Protection Spray to shield my locks from heat damage.
Step 3: Tight Curls
Using a 1” barrel iron, I start curling small sections of hair from the back of my head, then move toward the front pieces. I use a smaller barrel iron, as it creates tighter curls that give volume and end up holding for much longer.
Step 4: Flip and Spray
Once I’ve curled my entire head, I’ll spritz the Volumizing Hair Spray all over. For extra oomph, I’ll flip my head upside down and spray one more time. This product adds a ton of volume and doesn't weigh down the curls or make them crunchy.
Step 5: Shine On
Last but not least, I finish off this look by adding the OUAI Hair & Body Shine Mist to give an all-over shine and then gently tousle the curls. The mist tames frizz for a sleek look, without sacrificing any of the volume. My favorite thing is that I can use this on both my hair -and body- for a glowing finishing sheen!
