Hi there! My name is Remonia Morrison of @rem0nia. I’m a Jamaican based in New York and a part time fashion and beauty digital creator, as well as a compliance analyst. Today I’m going to be showing you how to achieve voluminous loose curls on old, straightened hair. While my hair has a natural kinky curly texture, I like to indulge in a good silk press. And when I do, I like it to last real long.
This hairstyle is perfect for when my hair is not so silky straight anymore and starting to look a little old. I find that slight puffiness adds a little volume and the curls hold better on dirty hair. It’s my favorite hairdo inspired by the iconic Diana Ross. She has the perfect carefree curls that I love! So let’s get started! It should take about 35 minutes to complete.
What You'll Need:
- OUAI Super Dry Shampoo
- OUAI Heat Protection Spray
- OUAI Volumizing Hair Spray
- OUAI Hair & Body Shine Mist
- Denman Classic Styling Brush 7 Rows
- 1.5 Inch Curling Iron or Wand
- Hair Clip
- Bonnet (optional)
Since my hair is 1-week old, I’m going to apply OUAI's Super Dry Shampoo to soak up the excessive oil in my hair. Then I’m going to section off the back of my hair, using a clip to separate the rest.
To keep my hair protected from heat damage, I’m going to apply the OUAI Heat Protection Spray and detangle with a brush. I’m using a Denman Classic Styling Brush 7 Rows which also works great when my hair is in it’s curly state. You can get it at Amazon.
To achieve loose curls, I’ll be using the SEDU 1.5 inch Curling Iron. However, any other brand or wand will do the job. Start by grabbing small random pieces and wrapping them around the iron in different directions, towards and away from the face. Alternating the direction of each curl keeps them from clumping together while creating a bit of volume.
Hold for 10 seconds then gently release, keeping the curls intact. I would suggest wearing a glove for hot tools but since I don’t have one, I’ll try to be very careful not to burn myself. Once you’ve completed the back section, move up gradually and repeat the above steps.
For this look, I like my hair to hang in my face so once you get to the front, curl those pieces over your forehead. What I love about this hairstyle is the freedom of grabbing random pieces without any define parting and just curling them in any direction you want.
This step is optional, but I like to throw a bonnet on immediately after curling to keep the curls scrunched up as they cool down. It helps to keep their shape. In the mean time, I’ll pick my clothes out or do my makeup.
Once hair is completely cooled, apply OUAI’s Volumizing Hair Spray to the roots. Flip your hair upside town and shake with your fingers. You can even flip from side to side to get those curls bouncing.
Remember, this style is carefree, sexy, a little wild but can be elegant at the same time by pinning it up. So don’t be afraid to shake it out! Just don’t run your fingers through the curls.
Last step is to add some shine girl! I’ll be finishing off this look with the OUAI Hair & Body Shine Mist. And that’s it! You’re all done and ready to hit the town looking gawgeous! Work them curls like Diana, girl. Haha!
