We can't scroll anywhere on Instagram without seeing the ponytail of the moment: the flipped ponytail. Equal parts 60's, 90's and all-over chic, the sleek style instantly perks up any outfit, plus you can actually create it on your own—no pro necessary. The best part about the flipped ponytail, though, has to be its versatility. Girls who are sporting a bob or lob can recreate the flip without any ponytail at all (scroll down to see what we mean). For the secret to nailing the flipped ponytail trend, we asked Justine Marjan, celebrity hairstylist to Ashley Graham, Olivia Culpo, and Dorit Kemsley, to show us the OUAI to the hairstyle. Keep reading for Justine's flipped ponytail step-by-step and secret to making the flip last.

The Inspiration

The flipped ponytail is a little 60’s and a little 90’s. It’s been seen on Christy Turlington on the cover of Vogue in the 90’s, Sharon Stone in Casino, Lucy Left Eye Lopes from TLC, Lizzie McGuire, the mom from Brady Brunch, Jackie Kennedy, Mary Tyler Moore among so many others.

How To Get The Flipped Ponytail At Home

I always like to start with a great blowout, using a round brush to flip the ends up. Prep hair with OUAI Volume Spray and Tresemme Repair & Protect Pre-Styling Spray then blow-dry with the GHD Air Hair Dryer and an R+Co Round Brush 4. When hair is 90% dry, take horizontal sections and blow-dry with the brush on top of the section, curling the ends up. When hair is dry, take horizontal sections again, spraying each section with Oribe Superfine Hairspray and brushing through, then using the GHD Curve 1.25-inch Soft Curl Iron to smooth the hair and flip ends up. When the entire head is finished, brush through and run OUAI Finishing Crème throughout.

The Secret To Making The Flip Stick

Prep! Make sure the hair has enough product in it to hold and that the iron really sets the hair before brushing through.

Why It Works On All Hair Types/Lengths

I love how the flipped ponytail can look both cute and sexy. It can be playful, retro, fun and looks great on everyone! I like that it can be worn behind the ears, in front, with a side part, or with a middle part. There are so many options to customize it to fit your unique look. It’s also fun to dress up with a playful accessory like the ones from the KitschxJustine Collection for added sparkle.
