You’re versatile so it’s only right your hairstyle is too. Can’t decide between a flirty, messy ponytail and a chic-sleek bun? You don’t have to. Kimberly Prado of @k.modemood is sharing step-by-step how she creates an effortless texturized ponytail then transforms it into a slicked-back bun. Keep scrolling for her detailed how-to.
Hi guys! I’m Colombian so my hair is medium to thick and also naturally wavy. I love a simple but sophisticated look for a date night or even a girls night out. I also love having my hair pulled back. Not only does it cut getting ready time in half, but it also gives you a mini facelift that lets you show your beautiful face. In this tutorial, I’m going to teach you step-by-step with products how to style two simple looks—from a messy ponytail to a slicked-back bun, both which take about 15 minutes to create.
How-To: Messy Ponytail
The inspiration: The vibe behind the messy ponytail gives me Kardashian effortless vibes. When your hair is already one to two days dirty from your previous waves or curls, it helps make the look last longer.
What you’ll need:
- OUAI Texturizing Hair Spray
- OUAI Matte Pomade
- 1-3 hair ties depending on how thick your hair is
- Brush boar bristle
- T3 Twirl Trio Interchangeable Curling Iron
Step 1: Grab all your hair and pull it back, bringing it to the top of your head and securing it into a ponytail. Make sure it's really tight, but not too smooth on the top. It’s also okay to have bumps. It gives it that effortless look. Then use a boar bristle brush to add volume.
Step 2: Pull a few hairs out around your ears and in the front of your head.
Step 3: To make sure your pony has enough volume, wave some pieces of the ponytail with a curling iron to give it more of an effortless look.
Step 4: Follow with the OUAI Texturizing Hair Spray. Spray it all over the ponytail to give it a textured, messy look.
Step 5: Use the OUAI Matte Pomade to smooth down unwanted pieces in the front.
How-To: Slicked-Back Bun
The inspiration: Lately I've been loving how easy this look is. It gives me Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid vibes. It is super easy and chic, plus makes you look like you just got off the runway. You can do this hairstyle on clean, wet hair or on dirty hair.
What you'll need:
- OUAI Matte Pomade
- Boar bristle brush
- 1-3 hair ties depending on thickness
- R+Co Vicious Strong Hold Flexible Hairspray
Step 1: I like to start off by grabbing half of my hair and brushing it back into a v-shape using a boar bristle brush.
Step 2: By securing half of your ponytail, it'll help you have that slicked-back perfect bun.
Step 3: Next you'll grab the remaining hair and the other pony that is secure already to secure it all together with another ponytail. A trick I learned is to tilt your head up towards the ceiling. It'll help you secure everything without creating any bumps in the back of your head.
Step 4: Lastly, you twist the ponytail in a bun secured with a hair tie.
Step 5: I like to spray some R+Co Vicious Strong Hold Flexible Hairspray on the boar bristle brush and run it through any flyways as with OUAI Matte Pomade to make sure everything is set in place.
