Since we launched our concentrated apple cider vinegar-infused Detox Shampoo, we've gotten a lot of questions about how it's different from our FINE, MEDIUM, and THICK Shampoos and how it actually benefits the hair and scalp. In addition to telling you what Detox Shampoo does, we thought we'd show you—ahead Chicago-based fashion thrifter and plant mama @beckytsivin shares her three-week Detox Shampoo diary including what her hair detox routine looks like using Detox Shampoo, Scalp & Body Scrub, and Treatment Masque plus a before and after of her air dried hair on Detox Shampoo.
Hello, angels, Becky here! Hope everyone is doing well and staying safe! I am super excited to share my experience with the new OUAI Detox Shampoo! Self-care is incredibly important to me every day, especially during quarantine when practicing something relaxing can make or break my day. Some activities I enjoy include taking baths, reading, and tending to my plants! My hair care is also a big part of my routine because when I have nice hair, it makes getting ready for my day that much easier—and that feels good—so I was excited to add this amazing product to my routine.
I live in Chicago, Illinois and we have our typical springtime weather right now: lots of rain, humidity, and even a little bit of snow! Chicago's moody springtime season has still been rather cold with the temperatures in the high forties to fifties. Since I live in a big city, there is quite a bit of environmental pollution and that mix of environmental pollution and spring humidity can create a hair disaster!
About My Hair
Before we start on this detox journey, I want you to get to know me—or at least my hair! I have very fine thin hair and I don’t have a lot of it! My hair texture is somewhere in between straight and wavy and, when I let it air dry, I get some light natural waves. However, if I brush it out, it turns pretty straight. I have no curl pattern in my hair at all. Additionally, my hair is fairly long, reaching my chest! Since my hair is long and fine, it tends to get tangled pretty easily and I love to use a bristle brush to untangle and distribute natural hair oils throughout my hair. My hair has also been color treated, having been bleached about two or three times. Additionally, my hair is relatively dry, especially at the ends. Don’t worry, I never use any heat on it—air drying all the way! Down below, I’ve included a picture of how my hair looked (on a good day) before I used the Detox Shampoo.
Generally, I tend to wash my hair once or twice a week at the maximum. My hair doesn’t get oily very fast anymore because I have trained it by not washing it frequently. However, I love my first-day hair the most because it has great volume! When I wash my hair, I usually apply some damage remedy as well as leave-in conditioner, which helps my hair from drying out, especially at the ends. I also use dry shampoo and volume spray; after my hair has been washed for a few days, it tends to get greasy and flat. The dry shampoo and volume spray help combat this. I tend to use them every other day after my hair is on its third or fourth day or on an as needed basis.
I have had a problem with scalp dryness in the past, however, not recently. My hair doesn’t get oily very fast, and I would say that my scalp is in pretty good condition. Still, everyone needs a good scalp exfoliation sometimes!
Three weeks of using the product and I am in love! I have detailed my experience week by week so you can see what using OUAI Detox Shampoo was like for me.
1st week using Detox Shampoo
During my first week trying Detox Shampoo, I used it in place of my regular drugstore shampoo. I washed my hair once during this first week. Since I have no one to see and nowhere to go, I can let my hair get a little more greasy than usual.
When I wash my hair once or twice a week, I have to use some styling products to keep my hair looking refreshed! I tend to use dry shampoo, volume spray, and a leave-in conditioner. When my hair hasn’t been washed for a few days, the ends tend to get dry and the roots get greasy in about three to four days. I start to use dry shampoo and volume spray on the third or fourth day of not washing my hair, and I use it every other day to keep up with the grease on the roots of my hair.
I used the Detox Shampoo after about six or seven days of not washing my scalp, and my hair looked amazing afterwards! One of the first things I noticed was that it was easier to style, less frizzy, and the color was way brighter than before! I hate when my hair color gets dull, but it looked UNREAL after my first wash with the Detox Shampoo (I am so happy it is safe for color-treated hair). The shampoo also didn’t weigh my hair down—a common problem I face since I have very fine hair and little of it! My hair and scalp felt so refreshed. The picture below is from after the first time I used the Detox Shampoo and air dried my hair!
2nd week using Detox Shampoo
During my second week of testing Detox Shampoo, I still only washed my hair one time this week since I had nowhere to be except for my apartment. I like to let my hair breathe as much as I can to let the natural oils work for a few days. Having very fine, thin and somewhat damaged hair, I have always been taught not to wash it frequently because it can actually cause more damage.
My hair routine looked was very similar to the first week—using dry shampoo, volume spray, and a leave-in conditioner. I start to use dry shampoo and volume spray on the third or fourth day of not washing my hair, and I use it every other day to keep up with the grease on the roots of my hair. One product that I did add in this week was a hair oil, which I incorporate into my routine when I feel my ends are getting dry.
When I finally washed my hair on the second week, I combined Detox Shampoo with the OUAI Scalp & Body Scrub and lathered the mixture in my hair. The result was so magical! My scalp felt exfoliated and clean; I think we tend to forget that your scalp can and should be exfoliated. My hair was brighter, softer, and less frizzy overall! In comparison to just using the Detox Shampoo by itself, using it alongside the Scrub made a huge difference! I wouldn’t recommend exfoliating every time you shampoo (especially if you wash your hair more than three times a week), but once a week or once every other week would make a huge difference in your routine too. I have included a picture of my air-dried hair after using the Detox Shampoo and Scrub (and my hair has been styled a bit) below!
3rd week using the Detox Shampoo
I only washed my hair once during my third week of testing the Detox Shampoo (you know, nowhere to be and what not). As hard as this stay-at-home order has been, I have really loved letting my hair sit as long as it can with its own natural oils! Throughout the week—since I am a creature of habit—I still used dry shampoo, volume spray, and hair oil! These products are all staples in my routine and keep my hair looking nice during the week.
When I washed my hair with the Detox Shampoo, I also added the Treatment Masque into the mix this week. I love the way both of these products smell, and they work together so well. I think that this may have been my favorite product combination during the three-week test period. To finalize my wash routine, I used the FINE Conditioner.
The Treatment Masque made my hair feel refreshed and moisturized – something that my fine and dry hair really needs because it has been color treated. As always, the Detox Shampoo made my hair frizz-free, silky, and bright!
After Using Detox Shampoo
Some final thoughts: As a woman who needs to take special care of my hair to keep it looking right, the Detox Shampoo is going to be a staple in my routine. The difference between my drugstore shampoo/conditioner and the Detox Shampoo is mind-blowing. I don’t think I can ever go back after seeing how amazing my hair looks since the start of my three weeks. I have already recommended this product to my friends (they will thank me later)!
Thank you all so much for reading my journey with the Detox Shampoo! It will for sure remain a staple in my hair care routine!
