Ask-a-OUAI: Which vitamins are good for hair, skin and nails?

We get a surprising amount of questions from followers about which vitamins are the key to better hair, skin and nails. Now, we’re a little bias when it comes to the subject of vitamins because we have three of our own unique supplement blends that are made specifically to give you better hair, ThinningDry and Oily, but we understand where you're coming from. Sometimes, you want the down and dirty specifics before you make the decision to add supplements to your diet. And when it comes to beauty, we say the more information you have, the better. Here are a few key vitamins that we’ve found will kick start your quest for hair-perfection.

 OUAI Haircare Supplements

Niacin, aka Vitamin B3

It improves blood circulation which brings oxygen and nutrients to the hair follicle to promote healthy hair growth. You can find Niacin in foods like tuna, beets, beef, nuts, and sunflower seeds but if you’re lacking, we also added it to our Thinning supplement to keep your scalp super happy.

Vitamin C

Protects the scalp and hair follicle against external stressors and free radicals which contribute to gray hair and hair loss. It also builds collagen which is vital for maintaining hair strength. You can find it in foods oranges (duh),  broccoli, and strawberries.

Silica

Silica is the reason you’re jealous of your four year old niece's hair. It’s good for development of every part of your body and has alkalizing properties that improve hair texture and strength. You lose silica as you age, but you can replenish your supply with a daily dose of Dry.

Biotin

Probably the most well known hair, skin and nail vitamin, biotin is said to accelerate natural hair growth and increase hair elasticity. Be cautious and follow the recommended dosage however, too much biotin may have adverse effects. It can also be found naturally in foods like eggs, avocado, cauliflower, berries, fish, and legumes.

Ashwagandha

In India, Ashwagandha is known as “strength of the stallion,” which doesn’t have to do with hair, but you have to admit is pretty cool, right?  But for real it lowers cortisol so that your body can produce the hormones it needs to promote hair growth and has antioxidant properties and hormone balancing effects which prevent hair shedding and promote shiny, healthy hair. 

Keratin

A basic (in a good way) protein that makes up your hair, skin and nails. Your hair needs protein because you hair is protein. Hair feeling dull, limp or dry? More protein might be just what you need as it can help reconstruct and strengthen your hair.

MSM

Without MSM, your body will have a harder time producing the proteins you need to keep you hair strong and long. With it, you can increase your hair’s growth potential lengthening the growth phase (anagen phase) of the hair cycle. The main ingredient in MSM is sulfur, and you can think of it as a building block for healthy hair.

Iron

Our bodies use iron for almost everything and it’s important to know that it’s not uncommon for women to have low levels of iron. Iron helps create energy from nutrients, balance hormones and promote skin and hair health through healthy blood circulation. Enhance your diet and hair with foods rich in iron including oysters, liver, red meat, beans, spinach and swiss chard.

Omega 3 & 6

Omega-3 fatty acids support thicker, stronger hair and by hydrating your hair from the inside, which means they help increase shine & radiance. They also benefit hair growth and density and are found in foods like salmon, tuna, white fish, sardines, egg yolks, and walnuts.
